Spyware Removal - A Tutorial and Users Guide

Next, we need to remove any software programs which are listed that do not belong in the system. This can be tricky if you don’t understand what you have in the first place. Most of the software installed on your computer is locatable via the Add/Remove Programs Window. Removal of programs within here may make some programs not function correctly. Be advised.

Disconnect from the Internet. Some programs will not uninstall without being connected to the Internet. If software will not uninstall without Internet Access then we know it must go, but we don’t want it downloading any new spyware while it does. Disconnect. If any software removal says you need to reboot, continue through removal but bypass reboot. Most will allow you to “reboot later”.

  1. Add / Remove Programs – Please do not delete Windows Updates.
    1. Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
    2. First pass through the list you should remove any software using the words; free, sex, tool, toolbar, xxx, search, internet optimizer, alerter, gambling, shopping, gain, ie tools, ncase, wintools, wtools, gator, weatherbug, p2p, date manager, precision time, bargain buddy, web rebates, hotbar, savenow, ebates, etc.
      1. There are so many to list. These are just a few of the most common. Try and remember what you removed.
      2. If you are not sure whether a software program is spyware or not, do not remove it. We will run software afterwards that will determine what is remaining on the system. Don’t worry; you’ll get it all out one way or another.
      3. Second pass through, look at the program names and delete programs which you know what they are and you know you don’t want them anymore.
    3. Start >All Programs (Programs) Start Up >Delete any shortcut that does not belong.
  2. Check Temp Folders Again and Delete as Necessary
The next step is delicate and can cause your computer to not function or even boot. It involves editing the registry and should only be done by qualified service technicians.
